Hounds rout Cougars 50-7 to breeze into area round

SAN BENITO — It didn’t take long for San Benito’s offense to get rolling. The Hounds scored on every possession but one in the first half en route to a dominating 50-7 win over Edinburg North in a Class 6A Division I bi-district playoff game Thursday night.

The Hounds will now await the winner between McAllen Memorial and Laredo United South. The Hounds will host the winner next Friday in the area round at a time still to be decided.

“We wanted to play on a Thursday and strike the iron while it was hot,” said San Benito coach Dan Gomez. “We carried over the momentum and I’m proud of our team’s effort,”

Running back Tyrone Harper opened up the scoring on the first two possessions with a 5-yard touchdown run and a 19-yard touchdown reception that put the Hounds up 16-0 with 6:07 still left in the first quarter.

San Benito marched up and down the field in the first half with a strong rushing attack, and also leaned on versatile wide receiver Isaiah Trevino, who had a strong first half and added a score to the mix.

“It’s all preparation. Our coaches do an excellent job of preparing the kids and getting them ready to go. Then the kids are ready to go and they trust the system, and believe in themselves and are ready to go each night,” Gomez said.

Quarterback Erick Retta threw for two scores in the first half and hit Jacob Cavazos on a dime from 34 yards out to extend the Hounds’ lead to 23-0.

The highlight of the first half was an 84-yard touchdown run by Harper that put the Hounds ahead for good at 30-0. The 84-yard score was a season long for Harper and was also his third score of the half. Harper finished the night with 13 carries for 175 yards rushing and three scores.

Retta capped off the night with a 57-yard strike to Trevino on the opening possession of the second half that pushed the Hounds lead to 47-0.

The home run ball came a plenty for the Hounds, with two scores coming from 50 yards or more plus a 34-yard score.
