The Lyford Bulldogs shot straight to the top of the District 16-3A DI standings after an impressive 67-26 rout over rivals Santa Rosa on Friday evening at Bulldog Stadium.
With just two weeks left in the season, Lyford finds itself in prime position to contend for the district title. Next week the Bulldogs travel to Kingsville to take on Santa Gertrudis Academy (2-6, 0-3) before hosting San Diego (5-3, 3-0) on Nov. 10 in the regular-season finale.
Frank Moreno led the team with 236 yards rushing and six touchdowns on 17 carries against the Warriors. In total the Bulldogs ripped the Santa Rosa defense for 480 total yards with 318 yards coming on the ground. Quarterback Chase Hinojosa threw for 162 yards passing yards and one touchdown on 8 of 17 attempts.
The Bulldogs scored rushing touchdowns from 3, 5, 6, 9, 49, 63, 52 and 5 yards out with one passing touchdown from 33 yards to Javier Gonzalez, who finished the game with 61 yards receiving on two receptions.
Defensively, the Bulldogs gave up a total of 287 yards to the Warriors – 276 rushing yards and just 11 passing yards. However, after some halftime adjustments, Lyford’s defense tightened up and gave up just 42 yards in the second half.
For Santa Rosa, the loss dropped the team to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in district. This season the Warriors have dropped league contests to San Diego and Lyford. The Warriors face Falfurrias (0-8, 0-3) at home Friday before traveling to Bishop to take on the Badgers (7-1, 2-1) in Week 11.
GOMEZ CONTINUES TO IMPRESS AT LA VILLA: Senior Zach Gomez is continuing to lead the La Villa Cardinals’ revitalization. In three games, the former Mercedes QB has help the Cardinals go from 0-5 to 3-5.
On Friday, Gomez did it scorching the Freer Buckaroos for 588 total yards and nine touchdowns.
Gomez rushed for 313 yards and nine TDs on 20 carries and passed for 275 yards on 13 of 18 passing. Gomez scored from 7, 59, 18, 18, 32, 6, 17, 6, and 5 yards out.
Another notable standout in the game was teammate Rey Felix, who finished the night with 149 receiving yards on five receptions and 73 rushing yards on 18 carries.
With the victory, the Cardinals improved to 2-0 in District 32-2A DI action with rivals Santa Maria (4-4, 1-1) up next at home on Friday.
