Pastor Donald Hamm of Kingdom Connection Worship Center said the vigil honored those not only affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas but those also affected by Hurricanes Maria, Nate, the earthquakes in Mexico and the Las Vegas mass shooting.
“As Christians we know that when we come together and we pray on one accord that things happen. Things happen for the better good of our community and for our nation,” Hamm said.
The vigil was a collaborative effort with several churches in CameronCounty.
Several CameronCounty officials were on hand to remember and honor those who have been affected by the recent disasters.
“In view of everything that’s been going on with regard to the natural disasters, the whole turmoil (and) climate, it’s been confirmed that prayer never hurts so anytime that we get an opportunity to pray for one another, pray for our community, pray for our county (and) pray for our country, it’s important that we take advantage of that all the time,” Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño said.
Lead Pastor of House of Hope in Harlingen Daniel Martinez referred to 2 Chronicles 7:14 for community members coming together to pray for the victims: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
“Due to the simple nature that we ourselves have seen horror abundantly in our nation and the division that we see so much, I think nature itself is telling us we need to unite,” Martinez said.
