Cold front a threat to boaters

HARLINGEN — A strong cold front forecast to plow through the Rio Grande Valley on Friday afternoon will create hazardous conditions for boaters on the Laguna Madre and the gulf.

National Weather Service forecasters in Brownsville have issued a small-craft advisory beginning at 1 p.m. Friday and extending to 7 a.m. Saturday.

The alert area extends from the Port of Brownsville to north of Port Mansfield.

Winds will shift to the north with sustained winds between 23 and 29 mph, with gusts near 40 mph on Friday afternoon.

Seas in the gulf will build to four to six feet tonight, and grow to between five and seven feet on Friday.
