SAN BENITO — If you thought you were going to get out of running due to the Heavin Resaca Trail being closed, think again.
The trails, which are widely popular among residents looking to get healthy, were supposed to be closed for an estimated two weeks while they were resurfaced.
In a Facebook post by the city, work on the Heavin Resaca Trail has been postponed until after Halloween, for safety reasons.
The upcoming “Tent R Treat” event slated for Halloween, would have placed children and participants too close to the construction site.
According to city spokesperson, Martha McClain, the repavement has been in the works for months.
There is no word yet as to when the repairs have been rescheduled.
McClain said the city commission is working to prioritize streets in need of repair.
In the meantime, McClain said crews that were scheduled to work on the trail will be focusing on smaller jobs to keep the workers busy.
Improvements will be made to a section of First Street between McCullough and Rio Grande and an intersection of Wentz street.
McClain said the repair will include a new layer of asphalt to the 2.6-mile trail Business 77 to Stenger.
In May, the city installed seven low impact eco-friendly lights along the south side of the trail near the amphitheater.
The project was part of a federal grant which cost more than $20,000 and came from the city’s Community Development Block Grant program.
