County judge orders re-opening of beaches

HARLINGEN — Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. this morning ordered gulf beaches re-opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Beach Accesses 5 and 6, along with Boca Chica Beach, were shut down due to heavy surf and extremely high tides.

The conditions led to overwash of the beaches, and due to the dangerous conditions, the beaches were closed.

A weak cold front will pass through the Lower Rio Grande Valley this afternoon, bringing cloudy skies and numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms, National Weather Service forecasters in Brownsville say.

Along the coast, temperatures will top out today in the mid-80s and may begin to fall this afternoon.

As the front moves through the region, wave heights on gulf beaches will build, resulting in a moderate risk of rip currents today.
