SB music festival slated for weekend

SAN BENITO — Get ready to hear the music of Conjunto.

The first Resaca Music Festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 21 at Heavin Memorial Park.

For several weeks in San Benito it appeared as though there would be no Conjunto music playing this October.

But, the city approved the $12,400 proposal from Rock Solid Management to handle the events production during a regular city meeting early September.

The approval came after Rogelio Nuñez, the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center’s founder, canceled the annual Conjunto festival when the city increased its fees to $17,365.

According to the city spokesperson, the festival is not a replacement of the Conjunto Festival.

The goal of the festival is to promote traditional Conjunto, Nuevo Conjunto, country and rock and roll music, the city’s press release stated.

Conjunto is typically a small musical group or band with four main instruments being used—

the button accordion, the bajo sexton, electric bass and drum kit.

The event is a means to help raise funds for the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum and to develop the cultural district of the city.

“The Resaca City Music Festival is part of the City of San Benito’s efforts to cultivate a cultural district which will entertain future community programming and events,” Museum coordinator Luis Contreras stated in the press release.

Food and arts and crafts vendors will be available at the festival along with family-friendly activities.

The event will host a handful of bands including Los Garcia Brothers, Retoño, Whiskey D, Buck N Crazy and Invazzion.

The event is a way for the city to celebrate the city’s musical heritage by promoting the evolution of Conjunto music.

The festival is among one of the city’s efforts to create the cultural district including the upcoming Freddy Fender Museum and Texas Conjunto Hall of Fame Museum.

“We are working to make San Benito a destination city, instill pride in the community and enhance the quality of life here,” Contreras said.
