SAN BENITO — The city is proposing a balanced $12.7 million budget which would come with a $1.8 million street maintenance fund.
Tonight, city commissioners are expected to consider approving the proposed budget’s first reading.
The city is expected to keep its property tax rate at 72 cents per $100 valuation, where it is projected to generate $4.5 million compared with $4.37 million this year.
The proposed budget would also come with a $4.6 million fund balance, which compares to the city’s current fund balance.
At this summer’s budget workshops, commissioners placed street improvements among their top priorities.
During the next fiscal year, the proposed budget — about $200,000 bigger than the current $4.37 million budget — would pump about the same amount of money into street maintenance.
While City Manager Manuel De La Rosa has proposed a $1.8 million street maintenance fund, this year the city spent about $1.79 million on its streets.
As part of the proposed budget, De La Rosa set aside $161,478 to fund 2.5 percent employee raises.
