Boating advisory issued as Irma fades

HARLINGEN — Fallout from now-Tropical Storm Irma is sweeping across the Gulf of Mexico, and a small craft advisory has been issued for the South Texas coast.

From Port Mansfield to the mouth of the Rio Grande, National Weather Service forecasters say winds will be 15 to 23 mph today with swells from five to eight feet and occasionally nine feet.

The advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. tonight.

The westward-moving swells generated by the storm also will contribute to an elevated risk of rip currents and unusually high tides, forecasters say, leading to overwash on gulf beaches.

Some coastal flooding is possible.
