Habitat for Humanity organizing support effort

HARLINGEN — As truckloads of supplies move north, more are coming in.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Harlingen school district,” said Wayne Lowry, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of the RGV.

The service organization does more than build houses, it rebuilds lives, and it quickly mobilized to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey.

“We just sent a 20-foot trailer loaded with much-needed relief to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Victoria,” Lowry said. “We are partnering with HCISD among many other businesses and Harlingen residents, but really Valley-wide because we have drop-offs in McAllen and in Brownsville.”

Children are doing their part by taking supplies to their schools for pickup by Habitat for Humanity.

“The school district is collecting at all of the sites and some are bringing what they receive over to our Harlingen ReStore,” Lowry said. That “ReStore” is located at 1305 Oklahoma Street.

“Some of the schools have been donating large pallets of water and those we are going to collect from the schools,” he said.

Habitat for Humanity is also partnering with entities in Brownsville and with Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr.

“We just sent five truckloads of supplies north,” Lowry said. “We are sending two more truckloads tomorrow morning.”

More supplies are sorely needed. Those items most in need are baby wipes, diapers, feminine products, water and insect repellent. H-E-B and local food banks are stepping up with food supplies, he said.

“It’s part of the Habitat for Humanity and the school district initiative for aiding the victims,” he said.
