San Benito CISD names new superintendent

SAN BENITO — The school district has a new superintendent.

The school board voted on the employment of Dr. Nate Carman as the new superintendent during a special board meeting last night.

After a closed meeting to discuss a new contract, board president, Michael Vargas, welcomed Carman.

The board announced Carman as the lone finalist for superintendent in early August.

The state requires a 21-day waiting period before extending an offer to the finalist.

Carman was in attendance at the meeting with his wife and daughter.

“I’m anxious and excited,” Carman said. “The 21-day waiting period was a little nerve wracking.”

Carman will begin his term just days after the district’s school year began.

Carman spent yesterday visiting campuses within his new district, meeting with students, teachers and principals.

Carman said he saw principals that were motivated to improve their schools.

“I saw a lot of positive things going on,” Carman said. “A lot of things geared toward student achievements.”

Carmen comes from Teague ISD where he worked as a superintendent since 2013.

Before that, he had worked with a number of districts including Pine Tree, Grand Prairie and Wilmer-Hutchins.

The board started its search for a new superintendent early in the summer after Adrian Vega resigned to pursue outside opportunities.

The board went through two different consulting firms in its search for a person that fit the board’s standards.

Hilda Rendon had been acting superintendent during the search.
