McALLEN — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz will visit the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday, his third trip to the region this year.
Cruz will meet with various trade industry stakeholders and local officials.
This will be Cruz’s second Valley visit in as many months, as the Republican junior senator of Texas most recently participated in McAllen’s Fourth of July parade.
When Cruz spoke at McAllen’s parade in July, he was met with conflicting shouts of protest and support.
Cruz is up for re-election in 2018, and he has escalated his statewide travel this year.
His top Democratic opponent, U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, the El Paso Democrat, also has been traveling around the state in recent months.
While Cruz spent his Independence Day in the Valley, a Democratic region, O’Rourke celebrated the holiday in Lubbock, a Republican stronghold.
In February, days before House Speaker Paul Ryan toured the Valley, Cruz accompanied Border Patrol on an overnight walk, talked with trade stakeholders at Mission’s Center for Education and Economic Development and met with protestors across the street from the CEED building.
He concluded that visit with a Rio Grande tour on Texas Highway Patrol boats.
Cruz has been barnstorming across the state during the current Senate recess with stops recently in Amarillo, Katy and Lubbock, among others, during his trip.
