Near 40-mph winds prompt boating alert

HARLINGEN — The National Weather Service has issued a small craft advisory until 9 p.m. tonight due to exceptionally strong winds in the gulf and Laguna Madre

Forecasters in Brownsville say a high pressure system in the eastern gulf combined with a low in the Plains will produce moderate to strong southeast winds along the Lower Texas Coast.

Winds are expected to range from 20 knots to 33 knots (23 to 38 mph).

The advisory area ranges from the Port of Brownsville north to the Arroyo Colorado to Baffin Bay.

Forecasters advise that inexperienced mariners, especially those in smaller craft, avoid being on the water today.
