Concealed handguns allowed on TSTC campus

HARLINGEN— The law known as “Campus Carry” is making its way to community colleges like Texas State Technical College.

The law allows those with a concealed handgun license to carry a firearm on campus. It was passed in 2015 by the 84th Texas Legislative and went into effect on January 1, 2016.

Campus Carry initially targeted public four-year universities and expanded to community colleges yesterday.

TSTC says it was ahead of the game. Exactly one year ago today, the Harlingen school implemented Campus Carry allowing concealed handguns on campus.

According to a statewide operating standard, certain areas are excluded from Campus Carry.

Areas known as Designated Gun Exclusion Zones include areas in use for pre-school children, the TSTC Police Department, Emergency Responder Offices and the student medical care and counseling locations affiliated with hospitals.
