It has been a busy summer for Cameron County. Some projects are nearing completion, while others almost have the green-light to move forward.
The Isla Blanca Park amphitheater is one such project. The county is currently working with architects and its contractor to finalize a design and get a price tag for the project.
“We want to attract more traffic year-round to the Island. There’s a lot of people that come during the summer, but we want to try to expand our activities out there, whether it is in the evenings or during off-peak times of the year,” County Administrator David Garcia said.
The amphitheater is expected to have a capacity of close to 4,000 people, Garcia said.
Other coastal park projects include the $3.5 million E.K. Atwood renovations, which should be complete by late August or early September, Garcia said.
Those improvements include replacing the existing pavilion with four small pavilions and one large one, new restrooms, a community rinse station, and two dune walkovers.
The parking lot will be redone and have five handicapped-accessible spaces and four spaces dedicated to food trucks. Additional parking will be located across State Park Road 100.
The county should also be finished with a new boat ramp and pier at AdolphThomaePark in the next few weeks, Garcia said.
The new Cameron County Animal Shelter, which will be located on 1390 W. Expressway 83 in San Benito, is a $1.3 million project for a facility more than twice the size of the old shelter.
The new shelter will include 34 large kennels (including 10 quarantine), with separate cat and dog isolation kennels, puppy kennels, cat kennels and 10 large exterior kennels for temporary relocation.
