SAN BENITO— It looks like the city is joining the fight against smoking.
City hall will host a public hearing Tuesday to introduce a new ordinance that prohibits smoking in certain areas within city limits. The ordinance includes prohibiting tobacco products and electronic smoking devices in enclosed and non-enclosed public spaces.
The hearing will take place at the municipal building at 5:30 p.m.
Those looking to speak against or in favor of the ordinance will have their chance to be heard Tuesday.
If passed, San Benito will join a growing list of cities in the Rio Grande Valley that have passed a similar ordinance, including San Juan, Mercedes, Harlingen and more recently, Alamo.
Penalty for violation of the proposed ordinance is a $200 fine.
