Tropical Storm Don forms near Windward Islands

HARLINGEN — The fourth named storm of the hurricane season popped up Monday afternoon off the coast of South America.

Tropical Storm Don formed just east of the Windward Islands, but poses no threat to the U.S. mainland for now.

National Weather Service forecasters say Don appears to be headed due westward as a tropical storm at least until Wednesday afternoon, skimming the coastline of Venezuela.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the island of Grenada.

Sustained winds were 40 mph, and the minimum central pressure was 1009 millibars.

Forecasters said residents of Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao should monitor the progress of Don.

Late Monday afternoon, Don was moving fast to the west at 17 mph, and that path is expected to continue for at least two days.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the storm’s center.
