STATE BOUND: Rio Hondo advances to state 7on7 tournament, La Feria falls short

At the McAllen state 7on7 qualifying tournament Saturday, La Feria and Rio Hondo were looking to punch their tickets to the state tournament in College Station later this month.

After a strong start in pool play, La Feria fell shy of reaching the state with a 26-21 loss to Hidalgo. Along the way La Feria defeated Kingsville Academy, Port Isabel and Blue Devil before falling to Hidalgo.

Hidalgo will be making its third trip to state. The last time the Pirates made it to College Station was in 2010 and 2015.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats steamrolled through its pool and are College Station bound for the first time in their 7on7 history.

Rio Hondo routed Port Isabel 61-24 in the semifinals to securing a state bid. The Bobcats’ hot offense averaged 39 points per game.

In pool play Rio Hondo defeated Rockport-Fulton, Hidalgo, La Villa and Port Isabel.

“It’s going to be a great experience for us to go up there and compete against the best,” said Bobcats quarterback Tyler Bush. “We want to show teams that we have the potential to compete at the state level.”

Rio Hondo will enter the state 7on7 tournament as a Division II school.

The tournament will take place June 29-30 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
