Five graduates marked ‘present’ every school year

LA FERIA — The Lions have graduated.

But five of the La Feria High School’s recent graduates accomplished what only a few people ever do.

“My parents always wanted me to go to school and not be absent, so I could earn a perfect attendance award,” said Juan Cabrera.

Cabrera and four of his classmates achieved perfect attendance every school year.

High school graduates Alejandra Teran, Enrique Leal, Jacob Cuellar and Daniela Alejo also made it to school every day throughout their public education experience.

“It takes a lot to stay in school, Cabrera said. “It wasn’t easy.

These students didn’t miss any moments of high school.

Each of the students were marked “present” 180 times every school year for 12 years.

Cuellar said toward the end of his high school years, heading down the stretch he battled some fever and cold spells in the nurse’s office.

He said he didn’t want to miss a day.

To the common student it sounds unreal. Most students are out a day of school or so.

Every morning they did the same routine.

Never once did they try to pull a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and fake they were sick.

They got up out of bed, combed their hair, got dressed and carried their homework to school every single day.

They each said it took determination and the will to carry on.

And they each said their achievement is going to help them through college.

“You can’t miss a day of college,” Cabrera said. “The teachers don’t wait for students at that level.”
