Honeys hang on for hard-fought victory over RGV Vixens

HARLINGEN — The highly anticipated matchup between the Harlingen Honeys and the RGV Vixens did not disappoint.

The seesaw affair saw both teams trade punches before the Honeys scored the winning touchdown late to defeat the Vixens 43-39 Saturday night at Victor Park Field.

After a good opening kickoff return for the Honeys, quarterback Tonya “TK” Castillo opened the scoring. Castillo used her strength to bulldoze her way past the Vixens defense and give the Honeys an early 6-0 lead in the game.

However, the Vixens responded with a touchdown of their own as Ashley Flores punched her way into the end zone for a 1-yard score to level the game at six apiece.

On the ensuing kickoff, Melissa Rios saw an opening on the Vixens defense and took it to the house for a 33-yard touchdown to give the Honeys a 13-6 advantage. After Ashley Weaver scored the extra point for the Honeys, Castillo went back at it again and scored her second TD of the night on a 3-yard scramble to extend the Honeys’ lead to 19-6.

Early in the second quarter, Flores took the handoff and plowed her way through the Honeys’ defense for a 2-yard TD to bring the Vixens within six.

With the Honeys leading 19-13, the Vixens’ Yesenia Ortega made something out of nothing as she broke a tackle near the line of scrimmage and then took it down the left side of the field to tie the game at 19-19 at the half.

However, it was not the Vixens’ night as Castillo scored the game winner to defeat the Vixens for the second time this season.
