After a impressive 2017 baseball season, Lyford head coach Chris Cervantes and his Bulldogs scored another victory by landing 15 names on the 32-3A All-District list.
However, while Lyford might have led the list, Santa Rosa wasn’t far behind and penciled in 11 players. Monte Alto followed closely behind with nine and Edinburg IDEA Quest landed seven.
The Bulldogs’ top standouts of the year were Layne Klostermann, who was unanimously named the district’s Most Valuable Player, Andre Ibarra, who was the Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and Abel Gonzalez, who was also unanimously recognized as the district’s Newcomer of the Year.
Coach Cervantes did not go unrecognized for his services and was named the league’s Coach of the Year after winning Lyford’s first baseball district championship since 1995.
In total, the Bulldogs landed six on the first team, three on the second team and two honorable mention selections.
For Santa Rosa, Francisco Figueroa was unanimously named District 32-3A’s Offensive Player of the Year. The Warriors followed it up by landing an impressive seven first-team players, one second-team player and two honorable mentions. Santa Rosa finished the season behind Lyford.
Much like Santa Rosa, Monte Alto also secured one of the district’s superlative spots. The Blue Devils’ Stephan Baxter was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year. in addition, Monte Alto added one first-team player, five second-team selections and two honorable mentions.
