Reader’s premise wrong

Mr. Pyle (Sunday May 13) should probably be congratulated on his humanitarian impulses, but his premise and history are all wrong.

The wall that divided Berlin was built by the Russian communist to keep people in captivity or they would certainly have left.

There are many very good people in the Valley, and many are of Mexican linage.

Many have never been to Mexico. Some are illegal and are not citizens of this country.

We spend a couple of months in Mexico each year and talk with the employees at the place where we stay.

Some of them have lived in the U.S.

Some have citizenship here. Some have gotten green cards, and some have been illegal. Many have returned to Mexico because they like it better.

Some want to be near family. I have yet to meet one who feared for his life or begged to leave Mexico.

I also taught for about 20 years, several of those in the migrant program. Most of those students had families who wanted their children educated and be able to move out of working in the fields and hot sun.

Most knew what it was to work. I enjoyed those years and those students.

Some of the students in the regular program where I later worked had a different outlook on education as did there parents.

They attended school as often as necessary to qualify for government programs. They saw little worth in work or education and were difficult to motivate.

The wall that is being built is to keep people who are trying to enter the US illegally out of the country. Some are coming from countries other than Mexico and with different intentions, not all good.

Maybe, as has been suggested by some, we should help Mexico build a wall on its southern border.

It is not nearly so long, and it would help Mexico with the illegal entries into their country and eliminate those who may choose to join the cartel.

From what I understand, the cartel is already here in Texas and active. I don’t believe that the Mexicans want to add the Muslim problem to ones they already have.

Hate is not an element in immigration. It is a matter of law and preservation of a countries sovereignty.

Although it is sometimes difficult for some to understand, our country is run by laws, not emotions.

Sincerely, Norma Christian Raymondville
