Deputy Education Commissioner tours Harlingen schools

HARLINGEN — The young medical students guided the visitor through their facility, explaining the simulation labs and other specialty rooms.

Their visitor, A.J. Crabill, was impressed with the Harlingen School for Health Professions and the students giving him the tour.

“I have seen community colleges that don’t create this quality of opportunities,” said Crabill, the Deputy Commissioner for Governance for the Texas Education Agency.

The students were giving him an informed explanation of the school.

“This is our ILC,” said Allison Gonzalez, 16, a sophomore. She pointed out this was a new name for a school library. The new name, Information Literacy Center, illustrates the new uses of the library.

“You can find books from other high schools,” Allison said.

Crabill is responsible for supporting the agency’s work regarding school improvement, accreditation, districts of innovation and other matters, says the TEA website. After touring HSHP, he planned to visit Bowie Elementary. His itinerary also included a trip to South Padre Island today.

“One of the great things about my job is visiting campuses to see what they’re doing and try to pass that on to other districts,” he said. “I want to know what they’re doing.”

Numerous Harlingen school administrators met Crabill at HSHP, including Director of Staff Development Veronica Kortan and Superintendent Art Cavazos.

Harlingen school board member George McShan appreciated the visit.

“I think the significance is its focus on student achievement,” McShan said.
