Police: Hit-and-run suspect arrested in Pecos, Texas

Harlingen police say they’ve arrested the man charged with the fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a Harlingen woman last week.

Police say Adrien Salas, 31, of Harlingen, was arrested at 1 p.m. in Pecos, Texas, 600 miles northwest of the Valley. HPD says it had evidence including video surveillance of Salas drinking at Papa Joes Burgers and Stuff the night of the accident.

Police issued an arrest warrant on charges of intoxication manslaughter. Investigators say they also located the car involved in the accident at a home in Rio Hondo.

Salas is accused of killing 57-year-old Natividad Chavez, of Harlingen, on the night of May 11. She was struck and killed on Business 77 and eyewitnesses told police after the driver hit Chavez he fled, turning left on Tyler Avenue.

Salas will be returned to Harlingen from Pecos in the next few days.

Police say they want to thank a number of Harlingen businesses who provided video footage of the incident as well as the Harlingen Area Crimes Stoppers tips which helped identify and arrest Salas.
