HARLINGEN — Harlingen South soccer player Aaron Sanchez made a promise awhile back and has tried extremely hard to keep it.
On Monday morning at the Harlingen South library, Sanchez took one step closer to fulfilling that promise as the senior put pen to paper and signed a letter of intent to play soccer at WileyCollege in Marshall.
“It was such an amazing feeling that I can’t explain,” said Sanchez. “It meant the beginning of a new chapter in my life along side with the accomplishments of going through with a promise I made to both my parents and my aunt that passed away my freshman year right before soccer season started.
“That promise was to make them proud and to do anything and everything I could in order to succeed in life.”
This past season, Sanchez helped Harlingen South finish with a 13-10-1 mark and helped the Hawks qualify for the postseason. In addition, Sanchez was also selected to the District 32-6A first team.
However, as Harlingen South Head coach Julian Robles explained, it is Sanchez’s hard work that’s most noticeable.
“He’s an excellent player and a hard worker, and his attitude on the field was always positive,” said Robles. “Last year he had an injury and he came back from it, and came back stronger and did an excellent job for us this season.”
Now Sanchez takes his talent to the next level where he will compete in the Red River Athletic conference and National Associated of Intercollegiate Athletics.
“WileyCollege is a great school that has a lot of options to pick from academically,” said Sanchez. “Soccer has been my passion ever since I could remember and being able to play another four years at the college level is a great opportunity to develop my game further and keep doing what I love to do.”
Last season the Wiley Wildcats went 9-5-1 overall and were 6-3 in conference play.
