Bringing excitement to the Rio Grande Valley

Eleazar “El Muneco” Hinojosa is one Brownsville’s newest and most promising professional boxers.

The lightweight fighter (2-0, one knockout) is coming off a strong showing on the undercard of the “Noche de Campeones II” boxing event April 22 at Pharr’s Boggus Ford Event Center.

Hinojosa recorded the quickest stoppage of the show’s nine fights when he won on a technical knockout against Carlos Vargas of Reynosa just two minutes into the opening round.

It was an energetic fight with plenty of punching — a clear majority of the blows landed by Hinojosa that led to such a decisive victory.

Following the fight, Hinojosa took photo after photo with the numerous fans who came to cheer for him in Pharr.

“This was amazing. I have a lot of support behind me,” said Hinojosa, a 2015 Brownsville Hanna graduate. “I was ready. I wasn’t nervous or anything. I knew what I was coming for and it was great to give the fans a good show.

“Winning like this (so quickly in the bout) means a lot to me, but I know I’ve got to keep working and continue to get better,” he added. “God willing, if everything works out, I’m going to try to become a world champion.

“I just thank all of my fans, all of my supporters and all of my sponsors. It really means a lot to me.”

Having compiled a 12-1 amateur career that began in 2014, Hinojosa turned pro last July. He trains at Brownsville’s MarCas Boxing Academy. Eduardo Castillo has been his coach since he was an amateur.

The young fighter is managed by Reyes Boxing Management.

“I knew Eleazar would do well in the pro ranks ever since I saw him spar Ricardo ‘Tato’ Lamas (10-1-1) and get ‘Tato’ ready for many of his pro fights,” said Jose Reyes of Reyes Boxing Management. “Even though Eleazar was just an amateur and Lamas was knocking everybody out and was undefeated at the time, you would see Eleazar handle himself well with Lamas in sparring.

“Eleazar looks up to Lamas, and you could say Lamas is Eleazar’s idol and inspiration,” Reyes added. “Now it’s Eleazar’s turn to bring excitement to the professional boxing fans of the Valley.”

Hinojosa is expected to fight again within the coming months, possibly in July.
