Parks and rec seeks to revive summer film series

HARLINGEN — The popular summer outdoor city film offerings may be making a comeback.

Lara Di Paolo, recreation supervisor for the city Parks and Recreation Department, told the Downtown Improvement District board this month the city is looking to offer three films at various locations this summer.

“We’re trying to do Movies in the Park this summer,” Di Paolo said. “I do know that it’s been done a long time ago and it’s something that we want to bring back.”

“We’d like to have one of our three movies here at Lozano Plaza,” she told the board. “We are looking for sponsorships to help with that.”

Di Paolo said the downtown Lozano Plaza and Tony Butler Golf Course are two locations, and that she is seeking to determine a third venue for the popular al fresco movie nights.

“We’re hoping to kind of spread out our movies throughout the city so that we hit different areas, get people out to different places,” she told the board.

Di Paolo said the summer movie schedule would show one film a month in June, July and August, but dates have not been determined.

“I think that’s great,” said downtown board chair Charlie Perez. The board unanimously supported using Lozano Park as one of the movie venues.

Previous city-sponsored movie nights also used Lozano Plaza as a venue, but the film series appears to have lapsed after 2013.

Called Family Movie Night, the films began at 7 p.m. and families were encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to view the movie.
