San Benito High School senior Seve Andrew Lopez has been selected as the Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol Head of the Class for San Benito High School for the 2016-2017 school year.
The “Head of the Class” (HOC) recognition program recognizes seniors attending 59 of the Rio Grande Valley’s high schools. Students are nominated by their respective school counselor and selected by an impartial committee.
Recipients are recognized each month throughout the academic year. As an extension of the “Head of the Class” program, Border Patrol’s RGV-Sector will recognize two to four HOC recipients as “Youth of the Year,” depending on the Sector’s finan-cial partner commitments.
Lopez accepted the prestigious award during a recent reception ceremony, according to Dr. Yvette Cantu, San Benito CISD’s Interim Higher Education Coordinator.
“Through all his pursuits, he demonstrates resilience and a strong work ethic. He is compassionate and always thinks about finding the time in his busy schedule to give back to his community,” she said. “It is all of these traits that make Seve Andrew Lopez a model student.”
Cantu describes Lopez as an exceptional and well-rounded student that excels in all areas. She adds that he has worked hard to excel in academics by taking on advanced courses such as Advance Placement and dual enrollment courses.
His academic excellence is evidenced by his performance on his SAT, a globally recognized college admission test, earning him along with two fellow classmates the distinction of being named to the National Hispanic Recognition Scholars Program.
Lopez has demonstrated his commitment to the community by participating in extracurricular activities. He has been a part of the both the Greyhound Wrestling and Football teams. He served as the Parliamentarian for Student Council and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. He also served as the Sergeant-of-Arms for the Business Profession-als of America student organization.
Lopez is an ideal candidate for this award due to his academic, athletic, and volunteer work.
“He has managed all the responsibilities of being a high school student, a college student, and an athlete,” Cantu said.
“On top of all his responsibilities, he has been passionate about giving back to the community through his volunteer work every weekend at the San Benito Food Pantry. During the summer, he has also assisted at his local church with vacation bible school and other related events,” Cantu added.
