Man surrenders after standoff with deputies

SAN BENITO — A standoff that started as a domestic violence call was deterred by the Cameron County Sheriffs Department Wednesday morning.

Deputies responded at 10 a.m. to the 500 block of Crab Hole Lane off Iowa Gardens in the Green Valley Farms Area.

There, Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said the man, who is not being identified at this time, was wielding a gun and threatening to harm his wife. He is believed to be in his 30s or 40s.

At the time, the surrounding area was surrounded by deputies after the man fired shots and reportedly threatened his family with a gun.

Investigators later discovered the man’s wife and and kids were not in the home.

Lucio said the wife had gone to file an instance of abuse to police and that’s when the man became angry and threatened to kill her.

When deputies responded, the family was still at the local police department.

A SWAT team and deputies tried to convince the suspect to drop his weapon. After some negotiations, the man surrendered to authorities and was arrested.

The man was arrested and Lucio said he will get help.

“He will be booked and then attended by a psychiatrist,” Lucio said. “We will try to get him the necessary help he needs. We are here to make sure everyone gets the help they need.”
