New café Rosita’s opens on west side

HARLINGEN — The restaurant empire of Rosita Lopez and her family has added another café.

Rosita’s Mexican Restaurant promises to bring “A little bit of Mexico” to customers at its new location on the city’s west side.

Rosita’s, which opened Friday, replaces Big John’s Barbecue and Catering at the site at 3806 W. Business 83.

The cuisine is Tex-Mex with some seafood with shrimp and fish and a healthy list of different burgers. The restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

The location on West Business 83 is, for Harlingen, surprisingly bereft of competing restaurants.

“It’s very nice,” Lopez said. “That’s why I came over to this location.”

The restaurant is large and offers room to expand if needed, she said. There are 40 tables and a party room available.

Lopez says her family operates 13 restaurants, including her brother’s eateries Los Nortenos and Don Kukos. She operates the new café, as well as restaurants on Commerce Street in Harlingen and in San Benito.

“I want to grow, expand and make it successful with a lot of people,” Lopez said amid the bustle of opening day. “I want people to recognize me in the street, and to make some kind of legacy.”
