Cardinals top Hawks 4-3 in District 32-6A opener

HARLINGEN — Isaias Ibarra hit an RBI single to drive in Aaron Pacheco in the top of the 10th inning as the Harlingen High Cardinals pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory over crosstown rivals Harlingen South on Tuesday night at Harlingen Field.

Every time it looked like Harlingen was about to grab the win, Harlingen South reached into its bag of tricks and pulled out a run.

Pacheco scored the first run of the night to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the first inning and it was only fitting that he scored the winning run.

Down 2-0 after five innings, Harlingen South’s David Torres scored the Hawks’ first run of the night in the sixth off an RBI by Chad Roberts. Kike Alvarado scored the tying run in the seventh.

With Edgar Arreola at the plate and a 2-2 count with two outs, Arreola got just enough of the ball to send it rolling a few feet in front of the pitcher. However, the Cardinals pitcher mishandled the ball and was unable to throw Arreola out at first, allowing Alvarado to tie the game at 2-2.

After the Cardinals took a 3-2 lead in the eighth, Harlingen South’s Roberts scored off of a throwing error by the Cardinals shortstop.
