Port Isabel’s Sidney Anthony Mock or “Trey,” as everybody knows him, has been turning heads for the past three years.
As a freshman pitcher for the Tarpons he was named the District 32-4A’s Newcomer of the Year and as a sophomore he was named a first-team pitcher. But as a junior last year, he suffered an injury that truly tested his character.
Despite the setback, he still found a way to succeed and helped the Tarpons clinch a spot in the postseason.
For his efforts on the field, the then-junior had a year to remember. Mock was named the district’s Designated Hitter of the Year and made the all-state first team.
Now, in his senior year, Mock will be counted on once again.
“We expect the same out of him,” said Port Isabel head baseball coach Robert Holland. “He knows what he wants to do and the team expects him to do well.”
In the team’s second scrimmage of the year recently, Mock hit a two-run home run and as he was circling the bases Coach Holland told him, “you know, that doesn’t count right?”
Mock respond, “I know coach…I know.”
The Valley Morning Star had a chance to sit down with Trey Mock and learn a little more about him.
Q: This is your senior season. What are you going to remember the most over your years as a Tarpon?
A: I will remember my track and baseball seasons the most.
Q: What was the best advice you were ever given?
A: The best advice I was given was to to always give 100 percent at everything you do and never quit.
Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from when you play?
A: My love for the game.
Q: When did you first get interested in playing baseball and why?
A: According to my parents, I started playing when I was 2 years old.
Q: What words of advice or encouragement do you have to share with younger athletes?
A: To always do your best and practice makes perfect.
Q: Describe your most rewarding experience playing sports.
A: I love competing, doing well in all my events and, of course, hitting home runs.
Q: What are some of your short-term and long-term goals?
A: My short-term goal is to graduate from high school, but my long-term is to be an MLB player.
Q: What is something people might not know about Trey Mock the person and not just the player?
A: I love to hunt, fish and being outdoors. Another thing is that my real name is Sidney Anthony Mock, they call me Trey because I’m the third.
