San Benito police search for restaurant robber

SAN BENITO — San Benito Police are looking for a man they say robbed Taco Jardin Restaurant Sunday morning.

Police say they identified the suspect by surveillance video as San Benito resident Eric Gonzalez.

They say he walked into the restaurant at 9:45 a.m. to buy a soda and when he refused to pay for it, he assaulted the cashier and reached into the cash drawer and grabbed an unknown amount of bills.

Police said Gonzalez ran into a nearby neighborhood. Several restaurant customers ran after him and told police he entered the passenger side of an older black Ford Expedition. They did not get the license plate number.

Another customer followed the SUV in their vehicle and say the Expedition was seen going toward Harlingen.

An arrest warrant for robbery has been issued for Gonzalez.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to call San Benito Police Department at (956) 361-3880 or the local police department.
