HARLINGEN — Four local legendary fishermen are on the program and ready to reveal some of their most prized tricks of the trade at a free Bay Fishing Seminar Thursday, Feb. 23.
The event is set for 7 to 9 p.m., Feb. 23, at Casa de Amistad, 1204 Fair Park Blvd. in Harlingen.
Licensed Captains Skipper Ray, Eric Glass and Mark Machado will share what they know about the pursuit of flounder, redfish and snook, respectively, while well-known Valley personality Bud Rowland will reveal how to catch monster trout.
The Lower Laguna Madre is the Valley’s hottest destination for these four saltwater bay species.
Mother lagoon, the Lower Laguna Madre, is covered with a lush carpet of seagrasses that provide habitat for a variety of saltwater species.
With an average depth of three feet, the laguna requires special shallow draft vessels for access to many fishing hot spots.
The shallow areas offer crystal-clear water and the opportunity to sight cast to fish — polarized glasses can cut the glare and give anglers a perfect view of their target.
Sight casting is a world-class experience and just one of the methods covered by this seminar.
The latest skinny water fishing boats will be on display by The Sportsman of San Benito and Dargel Boats in Donna, and there will be door prizes and raffles for a custom-made fly fishing rod and spinning rod.
Seafood recipes and information on fishing rules and regulations will also be available.
The seminar is sponsored by the Harlingen Parks and Recreation Department, Valley Sportsmen Club, Laguna Madre Fly Fishing Association, Dargel Boats, The Sportsman, Cameron County, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Sea Grant at Texas A&M University.
Texas Sea Grant is a unique partnership that unites the resources of the federal government, the State of Texas and universities across the state to create knowledge, tools, products and services that benefit the economy, the environment and the citizens of Texas.
It is administered through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is one of 33 university-based Sea Grant Programs around the country.

The program’s mission is to improve the understanding, wise use and stewardship of Texas coastal and marine resources.
