Library ‘Food for Fines’ program chalks up another successful year: ‘Toys for Fines’ up next

HARLINGEN — Never underestimate the charitable nature of people in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Harlingen Public Library’s “Food for Fines” program again proved popular with library patrons seeking a way out after holding onto a book a little too long.

“We did a little better this year than we did last year,” said Dauna Campbell, library director. “Last year we collected 120 items and this year we collected 172 items, so it’s picking up a little steam.”

Campbell told the library board at its meeting this week that in return for the food donations the library waived $138.75 in fines.

“What we are finding is people are donating more than they actually have in fines,” she said. “So it’s about the holiday spirit a little bit.”

Toys for Fines program

The library now turns its attention to its second annual “Toys for Fines” program.

Between Dec. 12 and 18, the library will be accepting gifts for needy children.

“These are where patrons can bring in new, unwrapped gifts and they’re going to be given to the Fire Department’s ‘Hearts of Fire’ program, and those all benefit children at HCISD that would not have a Christmas gift given to them otherwise,” Campbell said.

Those who make donations with a gift will have $5 waived from their fine, with a total limit of $10 per library cardholder.

For health reasons, no stuffed animals can be accepted, and all toys are subject to review and approval by the library staff.
