Children dish up a feast for their community

HARLINGEN — Yessica Mendoza was delighted so many neighbors had come for Thanksgiving dinner.

“We have never had so many people,” said Yessica, 13, a member of the LeMoyne Gardens Torch Club.

She and her fellow club members mobilized last week to raise more than $400 to pay for the meal.

Monday afternoon their neighbors and friends in LeMoyne showed their gratitude by flocking to the Boys and Girls Club for a plate of fried chicken, corn and mashed potatoes with gravy.

“I only expected 100,” Yessica said, the look of surprise sweeping across her face.

The Torch Club is a small leadership group and service organization which is part of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Torch Clubs are found throughout the United States.

The Lemoyne Gardens Torch Club has been making its mark.

The kids have donated money to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, to a cancer patient in LeMoyne Gardens and an injured firefighter. They made news last spring when they donated $300 to a Harlingen police officer wounded in a raid.
