Mexican Revolution: What was the impact?

SAN BENITO — The Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center and the Consulado Mexicano in Brownsville is inviting all to a celebration of the 106th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.

The focus of the presentation will be on the impact of Mexican Revolution on the Border.

Dr. George T. Díaz, assistant professor of history at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, will present “Arming Mexico: Contraband Commerce for the Revolution” from his award-winning book, “Border Contraband: A History of Smuggling across the Rio Grande,” published with the University of Texas Press.

Diaz served as the Visiting Scholar at the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston where he designed and taught a course on smuggling in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.

Díaz teaches courses in U.S. History and Mexican American history.

His research is informed by investigations in Mexican and U.S. archives as well as a lifetime of living on the border.

Andres Segura archive historian at Casa Mata in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico will discuss the Revolution and the border and Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez will present the case of the Porvenir Massacre (1918).

Juan Lugo (accordion) and Chuy Zuniga (bajo sexto) will present their repertoire on the music of the Mexican Revolution.

There will also be a special viewing of 40 framed photos of the Mexican Revolution by acclaimed Mexican photojournalist Agustin Casasola (1874-1928).
