Local builder plans 30 units in new development

HARLINGEN — Call them private apartments, or “little houses.”

Acacia Construction, a Harlingen builder which specializes in commercial and residential projects, is presently moving dirt on a development consisting of 30 stand-alone rental units on the west side of East New Hampshire Street at Hale Avenue.

“There are going to be actually 30 buildings, and none of them are going to be attached,” said Karim Zapatero, office manager for Acacia Construction.

Zapatero declined to say what his company is investing in the project, but he said a similar development nearby on Hale Avenue has proven popular with renters.

“It’s like 10 little houses,” he said.

Zapatero said that, weather permitting, his company hopes to have the new development completed by February or March.

There will be 18 two-bedroom units, and a dozen of the one-bedroom variety.

He said all of the previous 10 stand-alone units on Hale Avenue have been rented.

Zapatero said those units, the two-bedroom versions, lease for $675 per month.

“We’re thinking of doing the same thing,” he said of pricing for the new units. “When we finish, depending on how the market is, we’ll decide whether to raise the rent or keep it the same.”
