Opening some eyes: Local leaders learn about social efforts in community

HARLINGEN — Leadership Harlingen toured a number of organizations and facilities during their social service session day Oct. 13.

Leaders visited and toured Sunny Glen Children’s Home, Loaves & Fishes of the Rio Grande Valley and Valley AIDS Council.

Lunch took place at the Harlingen Boys & Girls Club. After a tour of the facility, the class listened to a presentation by the Harlingen Neighborhood Food Pantry.

“I just moved back to Harlingen, and I am so proud to see all that we are doing to make our community better,” said a Leadership Harlingen student. “I’m 100 percent confident my family is in the best community we could live.”

The afternoon consisted of tours of the Family Crisis Center and Ronald McDonald House Charities and a presentation by former Mayor Connie De La Garza.

The class traveled to the Chamber and ended the session with presentations by United Way of Northern Cameron County and Janine Marie Campbell with the Harlingen Educational Foundation.

“Common leadership qualities displayed by all organizations visited were: awareness, empathy, stewardship, and building community,” said another Leadership Harlingen student.

The next Leadership Harlingen session will cover the topic of education Nov. 10.
