Children to be treated to clothes shopping spree

HARLINGEN — There’ll be no cleaning out this closet.

The Harlingen school district’s Clothing Closet keeps an inventory of jeans, dresses, shirts, blouses and shoes for those in need.

However, instead of stepping into the Closet for clothes, Harlingen schoolchildren will make a beeline for Target next weekend to buy some new clothes.

“It’s really going to be 40 students and it’s a gift card for $100,” said Jose Luis Cavazos, executive director of the HCISD Parental Involvement/Dropout Prevention Program.

“Somebody from the district will be assisting the students,” Cavazos said. “They’ll get $100 worth of brand new clothes. The parents will be there with the students, and they’ll be going in there to shop.”

The shopping spree is made possible through $4,000 in grants from the United Way and the Harlingen Rotary Club. Cavazos said the United Way contacted the district’s Clothing Closet about providing the grant money. Once plans were finalized, the Rotary Club matched the grant. The Clothing Closet is under Cavazos’ office.

The trip to Target is important to the students for several reasons.

“We want to make sure that the students are out there selecting their clothes and making sure that they have a say as to what they like,” Cavazos said. “It’s a day for them to go out there and shop and experience being able to come up with choices.”

The students were selected by campus counselors based on need. The shopping trip will take place next Saturday.
