Although it’s only Week 8, the La Feria Lions could clinch their second straight District 32-4A Division I championship on Friday when they host Kingsville King in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week.
How is that possible?
The Lions (5-1overall) enter Friday’s contest at 1-0 in league play after a hard-fought 40-37 district-opening win over Zapata (1-5, 0-1) last week.
With a win over King (4-3), which also won its conference opener, the Lions would be 2-0 and could very likely run the table the rest of the regular season as they have only Hidalgo (1-6, 0-1) and Grulla (2-4, 0-0) – which have combined for just three wins so far this season – left on their schedule.
The Lions have quietly been one of the better teams in the Valley this season. The only blemish on their record came against a very good Port Isabel team on Sept. 16 when they fell to the Tarpons 35-21.
If they can win on Friday and avoid another stumble, the 32-4A DI crown will remain right where it has been since the end of last season.
Meanwhile, in District 32-4A Division II this week, the red-hot Rio Hondo Bobcats (4-2, 1-0) look to stay that way as they host Corpus Christi West Oso (3-3, 0-1). This past Friday, the Cats marched into Port Isabel and handed the Tarps their first loss of the season. PI (5-1, 0-1), meanwhile, will have to try to rebound at defending league champion Orange Grove (4-2, 1-0).
The Raymondville Bearkats (2-4, 1-0) will also look to stay perfect in league play as they travel to Progreso (2-4, 0-1).
Other key games in the area this week include: Harlingen (4-2, 3-0) at Weslaco East (3-3, 1-2), San Benito (6-0, 3-0) at Harlingen South (4-2, 1-2), Brownsville Hanna (3-3, 2-1) at Los Fresnos (3-3, 1-2), Edcouch-Elsa (4-2, 2-1) at Mercedes (3-3, 3-0), Bishop (4-2, 0-1) at Lyford (3-3, 0-1), Santa Rosa (2-5, 0-1) at Kingsville Academy (2-3-1, 1-0), Three Rivers (4-3, 0-1) at Santa Maria (2-4, 0-0), and Marine Military Academy (0-6) at Brownsville St. Joseph (5-1).
