HARLINGEN — Four years after it was proposed, the cross-border economic development agency called BiNED is finally taking form.
BiNED stands for Bi-National Economic Development, a unique new regional economic development effort between Harlingen, Brownsville, McAllen and Edinburg, as well as Matamoros and Reynosa.
Also included are Cameron and Hidalgo counties and the federal governments of the United States and Mexico.
The trans-national nature of BiNED has slowed progress on forming the organization, but officials involved say they finally are seeing results.
“We have a plan that we’re finalizing now by way of a forward statement that we’re sharing with members of the working group, and we hope to put that in front of various Valley leadership figures in I would say the next month or so,” said Mark Kroll, dean of the Robert C. Vackar School of Business and Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
“So we can breathe some life into the organization in a more formal way,” he added.
