HARLINGEN — Police have released the identity of the man who died Sunday after a mid-afternoon car accident.
Elisha Elizondo, 32, of Harlingen was killed when his car was hit broadside by another car downtown.
The driver of the other car was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He is recovering in the hospital.
According to a Facebook post by a family member, Elizondo was married with a 3-year-old child. It also stated that he was a pharmacist.
Elizondo was driving east on Van Buren Avenue in a Ford Taurus when he was hit by a Mazda sedan southbound on 3rd Street, police said.
The accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. in the middle of the intersection, which does have a traffic light.
The Mazda was traveling so fast that the Taurus was pushed sideways about 50 feet past the intersection down 3rd Street, police said.
The impact was on the Taurus’ driver’s side, which was pushed inward to almost the center of the car.
“To be pushed that far sideways, that’s a high rate of speed,” Officer Larry Moore said at the scene.
The Mazda driver’s name was not immediately released, but Moore said he is in his early 40s.
Moore said a toxicology report has been ordered.
There were no passengers in the cars.
