Come out and meet your police officers

HARLINGEN — Several National Night Out events will be held Tuesday evening around the Valley.

The communities of Harlingen, San Benito, Laguna Vista, Primera, Palm Valley, La Feria and Rio Hondo are encouraged to get out and meet their local police officers.

In Harlingen, the free event will be held at Lon C. Hill Park at 605 N. L St., and in San Benito at Stookey Park from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Officers will provide literature on crime prevention and give safety tips about avoiding property crimes and crimes against people. The events will also include free food.

Police encourage the community to share ideas with them so they can continue to improve services.

There also will be fun activities presented at all events.

Started by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984, the National Night Out events promote involvement in crime-prevention activities, police-community partnerships, and neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals, letting them know neighborhoods are organized and responding.

National Night Out now involves more than 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases.

Harlingen Police will be accompanied by the La Feria Police Department.

The Laguna Vista Police Department is having National Night Out from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Roloff Park located at 122 Fernandez.

There will be music, games, food for the kids, K9 demonstration, Child ID Kits, fire engine and police vehicle tours, raffles and more.
