BROWNSVILLE — Now that former Texas Southmost College president Lily Tercero has been dismissed, the college must begin looking to the future.
A presidential search committee takes time to form, and the Board of Trustees first will need to discuss the details of conducting such a search.
“I anticipate that we will have that discussion within the next month or two, then go out for a national search,” said Trey Mendez, vice chair of the board.
The last time a national search was conducted, each board member appointed someone to the 16-member committee, and consultants were hired to do the search.
More than 50 people applied for the position.
“It took about three or four months and we voted on the top 10 candidates, and then narrowed it down to six for the board to decide,” said trustee Reynaldo Garcia, who was on the committee.
Tercero was chosen because of her strong background in finances and familiarity with the accreditation process. She grew up close to the border in West Texas and also understood the community, Garcia said.
During Tercero’s tenure, the college saw the separate accreditation of TSC, the re-establishment of articulation agreements with local universities and the forming of partnerships with local school districts.
It also was selected as a “Bright Spot” by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Education.
Tercero had served as president since October 2011.
