A pregnant San Benito woman is the first case of travel related Zika virus disease reported in Cameron County.
Health officials held a news conference this morning to disclose the details of the health case.
They say the pregnant 26-year-old woman spent an extensive amount of time traveling in Mexico.
“Our department is working with health officials in Mexico to investigate this case further and, at this point, all of the evidence points towards this being a travel related case,” said Dr. James W. Castillo, Cameron County Health Authority.
“The individual is no longer at risk of transmitting the virus by mosquitoes based on our current understanding of how Zika is transmitted.”
Health officials say as soon as they learned of the Zika case they began spraying the city and surrounding areas for mosquitos. Castillo says the case is specific to the northwest side of town.
Castillo says he wants to remind everyone of taking precautions against Zika.
