Island cancels Council election

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — The election for City Council candidates who were running unopposed has been canceled.

The City Council voted recently to cancel the election for two seats up for election on the November ballot.

Councilman Dennis Stahl, Place 1, and Ron Pitcock, Place 2, are shoo-in candidates for this year’s city election.

Pitcock takes over for Councilman Alex Avalos at the end of the year.

Pitcock is a technology entrepreneur and business owner of the Hobby Town stores in Brownsville and McAllen.

“I’m not sure how to take drawing no opposition in my first run, and now when up for re-election,” Stahl said. “I hope it is a signal from the voters and potential opposition that they support the direction and actions of our City Council.”

Stahl has been on the Council for two years and will serve a three-year term beginning at the end of this year.

Avalos decided not to run for another term to concentrate on his business.
