BROWNSVILLE — State Board of Education member Ruben Cortez and an ad-hoc committee of scholars yesterday called on the board to reject a proposed Mexican-American studies textbook as factually inaccurate and “dripping with racism.”
Cortez, D-Brownsville, represents District 2 on the SBOE. In 2014 he proposed establishing a full-fledged Mexican-American studies course in high schools across the state.
Instead, the board voted 11-3 to ask publishers to submit textbooks that teachers could use in various ethnic studies courses.
