HARLINGEN — The collapse of Venezuela’s socialist experiment into hunger, food riots and this week demonstrations with tens of thousands of protesters, can hardly be cast as the stuff of romance.
But love always finds a way.
Debbie Cestero was born in Venezuela and lived there with her mother, a Donna native, for 10 years before they returned to the Rio Grande Valley and Harlingen.
After graduating from Harlingen High she went to college, married and had children, divorced and continued on a career arc as a political activist working with Republican women’s groups.
“I also did presentations throughout Texas at some of the women’s clubs where I was actually showing the parallels of the Venezuelan left and the American left,” she said. “I was basically showing how the left is exactly the same in both countries and that is how I met Dinesh.”
Dinesh would be author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza and he and Debbie began dating. This spring they married and she became Debbie D’Souza.
Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary film “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party,” is being re-released in 400 theaters in the United States this weekend. And the re-release of the highest-grossing documentary film of 2016 at $13.5 million includes showings at the Cinemark 16 and XD in Harlingen.
