HARLINGEN — Is it his emphasis on authentic learning?
Perhaps his promotion of technology in the classroom caught the attention of the governor.
Probably many factors contributed to Harlingen schools Superintendent Art Cavazos being named to the State Board for Educator Certification.
“I am pleased to serve and support the efforts of this board,” said Cavazos, who has just been appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to serve on the board until 2021.
Cavazos will meet with the board each quarter to discuss matters related to certification of educators.
“Really the board oversees all aspects related to certification, preparation programs for educators and the conduct of public school educators,” Cavazos said. “Preparation programs, what are the requirements to be certified as teachers, administrators and superintendents.”
The board is made up of 11 voting members. Cavazos is one of only two superintendents. The board also includes four classroom teachers, one counselor and four citizens, says the Texas Education Agency website. There are also four non-voting members.

EDUCATION:
1987 – While teaching in Edinburg, he also began working toward a bachelor of science degree from the UTPA.
1990 – Earned a master of education degree with a counseling and guidance major.
2012 – Earned a doctorate in education from the UT Austin.
WORK:
1987 – Began his career in education as a math teacher in Edinburg.
1990 – Transferred to McAllen ISD, worked as a math teacher, counselor and principal.
1996 – Became employed as the director of secondary education in the Mission school district.
2001 – Joined the Harlingen school district as assistant superintendent for secondary education in 2001.
Later became superintendent for secondary education before becoming superintendent of schools.
2013 – Became superintendent of Harlingen schools after the resignation of Steve Flores.
